Imagine building a new house directly on top of the ruins and debris of a prior collapsed home without clearing the space! One can only conceive of the many difficulties, problems, negative consequences, and even failures that would likely ensue.
If we extend this analogy to relationships, one can only imagine how promises or vows uttered in one's own mind, and especially marital vows exchanged within a spiritual realm or religious institution, are likely to have a significant impact upon all ensuing relationships.

Many people are surprised to learn that vows technically remain intact unless you pray and specifically ask for God to nullify them. There is a very tangible, energetic structure and marital foundation that manifests when we commit ourselves in marriage, and most especially when we marry before God and we pray to receive the Holy Sacrament of marriage.
In short, when two people have been together for a long time, whether cohabitating or married, after a separation, divorce, or even in the case of a widowed spouse, the energetic construct and foundation of that expired relationship will more or less remain standing long after the relationship has terminated.
In order to have complete freedom from a previous marriage or even a long-term relationship that was akin to being married, one must seek and request for God to grant a spiritual divorce. Otherwise, you will be building your new relationship and marriage upon a broken, toxic and damaged foundation and upon the remains of your previous failed relationships that are sure to seep through, contaminate and negatively impact any new relationship.
In order to be free of our past relationships, we must:
Pray for Spirit to cut cords, dissolve both relationship and marital wounds, void expired timelines, destroy all marital foundations as well as remove the toxic remains, contaminants, and damaged constructs of our failed relationships.
Also, Pray for God to dissolve all residual negative emotions and feelings commonly present in the aftermath of a failed relationship or marriage, such as fear, abandonment, betrayal, grief, guilt, grievances, resentment, anger, as well as other undesirable states and conditions such as grudges, hatred, ill-will, evil eyes and other impediments or obstacles likely to negatively impact all new forthcoming relationships.
I believe an energetic or spiritual divorce granted by God at the end of a long-term committed relationship, separation, or legal divorce is, in the long run, the greatest determinant of future success regarding a person's ability to attract and enjoy an enduring new healthy romantic relationship.
Apparently, 41% of first marriages end in divorce. According to recent statistics, approximately 60% of second marriages and up to 73% of third marriages culminate in divorce. I have no doubt that these marriages would have been far more likely to succeed had they prayed for God to wipe the slate clean of all failed past relationships.
